To makeover some DIY stools, you will need…

  • A standard stool from the local discount store (disassembled, leaving the timber seat pad, legs and screws)
  • Some fabric of your choice – we chose an embossed floral fabric from a second-hand shop
  • Some wadding from your local supplier
  • Pencil or fabric chalk
  • A normal pair of scissors
  • An upholstery stapler

Here is a step by step guide to customise your stool to your style!

STEP 1

Place the timber seat base on top of the wadding and roughly cut around it with scissors. The circle does not need to be perfect! Note: the more layers of wadding you add, the more comfortable the cushion will be. We are using one layer.

STEP 2

Place the fabric right side down on the table. Then, place the timber seat base on top as a template. Using a pencil or fabric chalk, trace around the seat pad.

STEP 3

With a minimum of a 3 cm allowance, cut around the circle you have just marked out on the fabric.

STEP 4

Now, it's time to assemble. Place the circle of fabric right side down first. Then, place the circle of wadding on top of it, followed by the timber seat base. Make sure that the screw holes in the timber seat base are exposed, facing up towards you.

STEP 5

It's time to staple the fabric to the timber seat base. Using your upholstery stapler, apply the first staple to the side of the circle that is directly opposite you. For the second staple, apply it at a 180 degrees from the first staple.

STEP 6

Secure the fabric at quarter points of the circle: 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock, 6 o'clock and 9 o'clock. Make sure that there's plenty of tension on the fabric. This is so that you have a firm and tight pull across that wadding.

STEP 7

Simply make your way around the circle, folding small pleats by hand and stapling them in place. Remember to keep that tension on. After this, cut off any extra fabric and frayed edges.

STEP 8

Now it's time to reassemble! Line up the holes in the frame and the timber seat base. Reattach the base using the originally supplied screws. Simple as that!
