Light – it allows us to see when its dark, it can create a mood and atmosphere, and look fantastic in our home. Depending on the space the lighting needs to be used for, the results and different lighting options you can have, may make or break the space. In order to make your lighting look great, we will break it down into three main components…
Our main source of lighting, generally leading towards ceiling lights and pendants. This type of lighting illuminates the space so we are able to see properly. Down lights are extremely popular as well as ceiling fans integrated with lighting, or ceiling pendants/fixtures.
Task lighting can include lamps (perfect for study spaces or bedside tables), lighting above workspaces like kitchen benches and strip led lighting which is super popular in bathrooms. Task lighting helps to improve our concentration when completing tasks and brightens up the space we are working in to make everything become more visible.
Accent lighing is placed purposely around the home to make feature pieces stand out even more! Accent lighting is purely for aesthetic appearance.
A common misjudgement is that in a space, there can only be one form of lighting. Most spaces in our home need two or three – and lighting is also another form of decoration and by have many levels of lighting you can create a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
Down lights are extremely popular in living spaces but it can also be used as task lighting in areas like kitchens and bathrooms. Accent lighting can also come into play by placing down lights directly above feature pieces that you want to draw attention to.
For rooms like open living areas and lounge rooms, a combination of ceiling lighting, floor lamps and side lamps can be used to create many different levels of lighting! Use your lights as a form of decoration. You can also save power by doing this – just keep in mind you don’t have to have all the lighting on at once! If you are curled up on the lounge reading your favourite magazine, turn on the side lamp for task lighting!
For outdoor spaces, lighting options like lanterns and candles can be used to create an ambiance for your entertaining space!
Bedrooms can also be great for candles and bedside lamps in combination with your general lighting.
Task lighting is super effective in study spaces or nooks – a lamp or two can create a very productive atmosphere and look great with your style of decorating.
So by combining general, task and accent lighting, we can create different moods and atmospheres in our rooms, as well as creating a super stylish way of decorating!
