Belinda launched Chez B at the start of 2015. She calls herself a styling tragic with a knack for renovating and a healthy (ish) addiction to markets – qualities that are evident in the properties I have transformed during my twenty-five year love affair with interior decorating and real estate. Chez B is the declaration of my love for creating beautiful spaces and exquisite presentation with a timeless appeal.
How long have you been in the industry?
I started my own Property Styling business at the beginning of 2015. My second child had just finished school, I’d just turned 50 and I knew the time was right for me to follow my dreams.
Do you run your own business? If so for how long?
Yes I do run my own business. I have helped my husband for the past 25+ years run his busy legal practice so starting Chez B came second nature to me.
What made you get into the industry?
Since I was a little girl I would rearrange my parents furniture before mum would get home from work. I have renovated numerous properties over the years and sold numerous properties, styling them myself. So many friiends and family have told me over the years that I’m a natural at it whereas I have had to come to terms with the fact that not everyone understands what looks good and how to put it together. Coming into the industry has been a natural progression for me and I’m following my passion and earning an income from it!
What is your favourite part of working in home staging?
I’ve been very fortunate to have beautiful clients. My past careers have been in both Medical and Human Resources as well as renovating in my spare time so I have a natural empathy when meeting clients and knowing the stress they are feeling about putting their home on the market. I’d have to say my favourite part is running around like mad before styling day to get all the inventory together and coordinate the logistics and then creating something wonderful on staging day and seeing the look on the clients face when they see it for the first time in their home! This career combines all my passions of people, problem solver, administrator, decorator and shopper in one!
What advice would you give someone wanting to enter the industry.
Styling is secondary to getting to know your client and what their needs are. You need to be a counsellor, have diplomacy and empathy, work out your target market before styling as well as be a stylist.
I personally like the fact that I have age and experience on my side and an empathy with clients as I’ve sold enough properties of my own to know how stressful it can be. I never felt the need to work for someone else before launching Chez B because I knew what I wanted to stand for in the marketplace and offer a service that would provide good quality furniture and a look that feels like home.
