Styling Tips·Naomi Findlay·May 9, 2025· 3 minutes
The colours that surround us in our homes have a bigger impact on the way we feel, than what you may think. There is a whole world of psychology hidden behind colour and tone, and each colour can enhance the way we feel in different areas of the home. Colour psychology is a tool that we can mould to change our moods and the feeling or vibe that you feel when you are in a room. So, being one of the main living areas of the home, and a room where most of the household will spend time, the lounge room. It is so important to feel comfortable in a space like a lounge room, not only for yourself but everyone around you. A lounge room is a shared space so it needs to feel great for everyone using it. With this in mind, beautiful earthy tones like warm greys, beiges and tans are great to use for large blocks of colour. Things like your wall colours, flooring, large pieces of furniture like lounges, coffee tables, entertainment units, side tables, rugs and desks. BUT when introducing other colours into a space, I like to use a 70/30 rule. 70% neutral 30% colour. Other great colours to introduce into your lounge room are anything that relate to outside. Blues and greens are great for this. Subconsciously we relate to nature, and when these colours from outside are introduced inside, we feel stimulated. Even a potted plant introduced into your space will lift up the atmosphere and introduce that pop of colour that you need! If you are bold enough, you could even paint a coloured feature block of walls in your chosen colour – just remember, bright is sometimes not best. Keep a white or black tone running through your colour to ensure it relates to the other neutral colours around it!
